Description

The delivery of a new visitor reception building, retail shop and visitor car park at Ightham Mote in 2024.

Ightham Mote is a Grade 1 listed medieval moated manor house near Sevenoaks, Kent. Registered as a Scheduled Monument, part of the house’s original structure dates back to the 14th century.

Set in a landscape of formal and informal gardens with lakes and woodland, the house and its gardens have been owned by the National Trust since 1985. It is one of the Trust’s most popular visitor properties in Kent.

With extensive heritage project experience, our team are delighted to be working closely with the team at the National Trust to ensure the smooth delivery of the project whilst it remains open to the public.

Our initial works on site have seen the public parking relocated from the historic Walled Garden to another part of the estate. This will enable the Trust to reinstate the historic and traditional planting to this area at a later date.

Other works undertaken will deliver a new visitor reception and shop - freeing up the Coach House, the shop’s original location, for visitor enjoyment.

The building will be fully sustainable, featuring hempcrete walling, air source heat pumps, a green roof and sustainable surface water management, all appropriately designed to reflect the surroundings.

When complete, the improved facilities will enable the estate to accommodate their projected increase in annual visitor numbers. Critically, it will also protect the conservation of and access to this important historic house and gardens for future generations of visitors.
